I know i have been intimidated by the thought of protesting.
Can i go by myself? What should i bring? What is legal?
Here is a guide with some tips that could help.
Start with a legal protest that has organizers.
Showing up on any given street corner and impeding law enforcement is NEVER recommended.
Before the Protest: Planning & Preparation
Define Your Goal:
Know exactly what change you want (policy, awareness) and who has the power to deliver it.
Join a Group:
Connect with local organizers to learn the specifics of the event and build coalition.
Know Your Rights:
Understand your First Amendment rights and local laws regarding assembly, filming, and police interaction.
Plan Logistics:
Secure permits if needed, choose impactful timing/location, and arrange media outreach.
Digital Safety:
Encrypt your phone, turn off biometric IDs (fingerprint/face unlock), and consider airplane mode to protect data.
During the Protest: Behavior & Safety
Stay Peaceful & Disciplined: Your goal is to make a point, not provoke; avoid agitators and violence.
Clear Messaging: Use bold, simple signs; symbolic actions (kneeling) can also be powerful.
Protect Yourself: Wear comfortable shoes, bring water (for tear gas), snacks, and safety gear (goggles, mask).
Hands Visible & Calm: If confronted, keep hands visible, stay calm, don't resist, and state you wish to remain silent and want a lawyer if detained.
Document Safely: Record events if safe, but share footage with trusted legal groups, not just social media, to protect identities.
After the Protest: Follow-Up
Check-In: Contact friends/family to confirm you're safe.
Seek Legal Support: If arrested, use pre-arranged legal hotlines or support.
Sustain the Movement: Effective protests build momentum; follow up to influence policy or shift loyalties long-term.
